Darum sage uns, was dünkt dich: Ist's recht,

daß man dem Kaiser den Zins gebe, oder nicht?

Sie sprachen zu ihm: Des Kaisers. Da sprach er zu ihnen:

So gebet dem Kaiser, was des Kaisers ist, und Gott, was Gottes ist!

Meister, Meister, ist es recht,

Dass dies Volk, von Gott erwählet,

Wird mit Schatzung so gequälet

Und muss sein der Heiden Knecht!

Meister, Meister ist es recht?

Sag es, sag es frei heraus,

Soll man nicht eh’r widerstreben

Als dem Kaiser Zinse geben;

Hier ist Gottes Volk und Haus,

Sag es, sag es frei heraus?

Gib uns, gib uns deinen Rat,

Meister, mit der weisen Zunge,

Dem es alles wohl gelunden,

Was er angefangen hat,

Gib uns, gib uns deinen Rat!

Gebet dem Kaiser, was des Kaisers ist,

und Gott, was Gottes ist. 

Therefore tell us, what do you think: is it right

that the interest is paid to the emperor, isn't it?

They said to him: Of the emperor. Then he said to them:

So give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's!

Master, master, is it right

That this people, chosen by God,

Is so tormented with treasure

And must be the heathen's servant!

Master, master is it right?

Say it, say it out loud

Shouldn't you resist

Than give interest to the emperor;

Here is God's people and house,

Say it, say it bluntly?

Give us, give us your advice

master, with the wise tongue,

To whom everything went well

what he started

Give us, give us your advice!

Pray to Caesar what is Caesar's

and God what is God's.
